Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the reading specialist at a charter middle school in the South Bronx. I teach pull-out classes of 5th grade students who are low readers. My students begin the year reading 3-5 years below grade level, and I am working with them to improve their skills to the point where they can once again be in the mainstream English class. Our school has classroom libraries for the fifth and sixth grades in the main English classrooms. However, my students cannot use these libraries on a regular basis since they are in those other classrooms where my students do not ever have class (I teach them in a smaller, dedicated classroom, the "reading room"). It has been very difficult to encourage them to read independently when we do not have a reasonable selection of appropriate books for them to choose from in the room where I teach. In addition, my students need books that are on their present level -- sadly, for many of them that means kindergarten and first grade books. While I fully anticipate that their skills will improve over time, I need to meet them where they are and build from there. My school is a middle school, and we do not presently have many books on a lower elementary level for my students to read. Independent reading is one of the most important ways to improve reading skills. My students would benefit enormously from their own classroom library of books on their reading level. I know that their enthusiasm would increase exponentially if we had a new selection of books for them to read in the reading room. I am requesting the Scholastic Ready-to-Go Classroom Library Sets for the kindergarten and first grade level. Having a variety of interesting and accessible books will make a world of difference to my students' ability and desire to read independently. From the enthusiastic response to the few books that I currently have, I know that my students would take full advantage of the opportunity to read more books. Thank you very much for considering this proposal!
