Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders are amazing knowledge seekers and full of questions. They absolutely love engaging in learning with their classmates and participating with each other everyday! My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and many of them are English Language Learners or special needs students and come from low socio-economic households. Each and every one of them is unique with their own set of special strengths and abilities.

My students' motivation and eagerness to learn is their biggest and most significant strength!

They are inner-city kids that have bravely faced the unexpected challenges of this pandemic. During these uncertain times, they are still determined and dedicated to their work. They wake up every morning, happy and ready to learn and engage with their school family. They are a most amazing group of kids that will surely have the brightest of futures!

My Project

My students are amazing little learners, and a truly diverse group of children. I want to showcase their uniqueness and greatness by re-vamping our classroom library and adding books that reflect and represent them. I strongly believe in representation...especially when you are learning in school. Books with diverse characters can become one of the most greatest learning tools a child can ever encounter.

Students are motivated to read, explore and learn when they read books that they can connect with; stories that they can truly feel and understand.

A huge part of teaching a social emotional curriculum is knowing how to find the right literature to teach and explain concepts. I will be able to use these new titles in our library as read alouds to introduce social emotional learning topics, such as respect, compassion, kindness, self-esteem, growth mindset, self-control, and the list goes on! Through read alouds and class discussions students will be able to learn and understand these SEL topics, but most importantly connect with stories that reflect their own experiences. Our discussions can lead to great insights and students can engage in meaningful conversations about making choices dealing with a variety of situations. Connections are built even deeper when the characters and stories they read about reflect and represent their own experiences. I want my students to have rich and meaningful learning experiences that will enable them to truly learn and help them make right decisions as little human beings. This is the sole purpose and outcome we want from social emotional learning!

In addition to using these books as read alouds, students will be able to borrow and revisit their favorite stories with their favorite characters!
