Recently, I had the awesome opportunity of transitioning from 2nd grade general education teacher to the 1st and 2nd grade STEM teacher, changing my life forever. These 1st and 2nd graders come from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, with most of them coming from very low-income families. The Title I school that I have the privilege of teaching in is located in a rural area in which many of the students do not get to experience life outside of their hometown.
School is their safe place that allows them to take their mind off the troubles that await them at home.
I want them to experience this risk-free environment on a daily basis.
My Project
I am a new STEM teacher in a title 1 school that has the opportunity to reach right at 1,000 students. A large percentage of these students have parents who work low-income positions at factories and plants. Unfortunately, sometimes students get the idea that this is all that is out there for them.
My goal is to introduce my students to a wide variety of STEM related careers to let them know they can literally be whatever they want when they grow up!
These items, including the Bloxels and the play-dough, will be used to introduce video game design and stop-motion animation. The students will be having so much fun they will forget they're even learning!
