This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? Questions which may never be answered but riddle me this, would you want to learn in an environment not inclusive of art? In my life visual art is prevalent as are artists. Therefore, I feel compelled to allow art to help drive my instruction. Scholars in my classroom will utilize the materials I am requesting to help make learning vivid, alive.

I have been a NYC educator for 23 years.

In that time my scholars have learned to use art to close gaps in their understanding of complex concepts. They have created props, sets and costumes for performances after tackling the complex roles power plays in our country's history. They have constructed structures while learning about geometry to test theories about sturdy shapes. My scholars have used art to create diverse portraits when studying grammar and character traits. They have created songs collaboratively to showcase their understanding of concepts and to help their peers to remember those concepts. Scholars have created, edited and published videos for final projects. One of my favorite projects was the Funko Pops inspired creations they made in a workshop led by one of my students during Covid. The Funko Pop inspired sculptures accompanied essays written about fabulous women in history and yes they did gift me with my own person sculpture at the end of the year.

In a time when the arts is one of the first programs to be cut help me to give instead of taking away.
