This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a community where my students come to learn, share, and find safety and comfort. We are third grades in an semi-rural area. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, from watermen and farmers, to military families.
The 26 third graders in my classroom care about each other, and work hard to express their citizenship and respect for each other.
I call them my heroes, because they work hard to overcome any adversity that threatens our community of learners.
We gather daily for morning meetings. During this time we share about ourselves, our lives, and our hopes and dreams. My students amaze me every day with their insight, their compassion, and their empathy for their classmates.
My Project
My goal is to build a classroom that is rich in conversation, collaboration, and community. From a morning message that greets my students as they walk in the door, to shared readings, poems, songs, and math talks, we gather to build a safe and comfortable learning community.
Students need to be able to move, to turn and talk, and to work in groups.
A classroom carpet will allow us to gather in a comfortable place.
The school is under renovation with new tile being laid. The carpet will also serve as visual for our community gather place.
