My Students

I teach 8th grade ELA in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. My students are inquisitive, ambitious and eager to learn. I work hard to make my classroom an engaging learning environment full of real-world texts and learning activities. My students are tremendous thinkers and speakers who love to debate important topics going on in their community and the world around them. Over the years, my students have made tremendous progress in their reading skills and have shown great gains on state assessments. Some of my students come from difficult circumstances, but as a school and as a teacher, we do our best to meet their social-emotional and learning needs.

My Project

The goal of this project is to help inspire my students to become better readers. Many of my students are engaged learners, but when it comes to reading independently in class or at home, some of my struggle to meet expectations. Some students attribute this to the lack of engaging books in my classroom library. Not all students see themselves in the books in my class library, something I'm hoping to address in my book selections. My goal as an English teacher has always been to encourage students to love reading as much as I do. Sadly, my school does not have a school-wide library that my students can visit to check out books, which means that my classroom library is their only option. I have replenished my library over the years, but it needs to be rejuvenated with some new and interesting books that will grab my student's attention and ignite their love for reading.
