Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first year as a fifth grade teacher, I was expecting to see children that had outgrown certain kind of toys. It was to my surprise to find out that the kids were still very young at heart. Our principal has asked us to have a cozy corner for SEL. In my corner I put some stuffed animals and some Squishmallows. The kids fell in love with them and keep grabbing them when they go use their Ipads to do their assignments in the computer.

One day, a few of my students asked me if i was planning to give them a gift.

I said yes. So they grabbed the Squishmallows and said I want one of these. They hugged the squishmallow tight. My heart melted because I know most of my students live in shelters and they probably do not that many things that make them happy. The children have gone through so much in the few years they have lived. Many of them have struggled to get here with their parents because they have hope to have a better future. In addition, they come from broken families.

It is for that reason I think that getting a toy they enjoy might make a difference in their life. Maybe this will help them get off their mind of their current situation. I have heard things like my Mom doesn't have any money to get me this... I know they need to get this to make their life a little better and so that they realize that there are people that care for them.
