My Students

Students who read independently become better readers and writers, have better vocabularies, score higher on tests, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. So, the most important thing I can do is to provide my students with a wide variety of books that grab their attention.

My students come from a rich background of cultural diversity and varying degrees of sociol-economic status.

Based on a beginning of the year reading survey, I can see that about 20% of my students do not like reading and about 60% read, but they are not reading consistently and they are not challenging themselves in terms of book choices. My classroom is paperless, with students completing all assignments on the iPad. It is exciting and engaging, and a great tool to teach them all the important academic standards. I have all the basics covered. I need, however, to go beyond that. What my students need to fully maximize their potential is free and easy access to a wide selection of books to read independently. I have used available classroom funds, as well as personal funds, to build a classroom library to accomplish that, but I have work to do in terms of providing more variety in each of the genres.

My Project

My students need over 30 challenging new classroom library books including Shatter Me, Days of Blood and Starlight and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. All of the books on my requested materials list cover a wide range of interests and reading levels. I teach students whose reading levels vary from a third grade level to post high school levels. I need to have a variety of books to meet the needs of all students. It is always a day brightener for my students when I introduce new books to our classroom library and give them the opportunity to check them out. In addition to my book talks, students love to share their thoughts on books they have discovered. I have no doubt that the new books will generate all sorts of exciting conversations in our classroom, and students will do significantly more reading. I have no doubt that the books on this requested list will be flying off of classroom books shelves all year long. I will have to keep a waiting list for most of these books!

You won't get a bigger bang for your buck than by providing students with books that they will enjoy reading.

Successful authors Pat Conroy and Gary Paulson will be the first of many to tell you that reading quite literally saved their lives and made them who they are today. The donations to this project will provide more books for my students to read independently. The more kids read independently, the more they will grow as readers, writers, thinkers, and learners. Reading matters.
