This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At I.S. 5 we live our daily mission by "talking like scholars, writing like experts, thinking like innovators, and living like leaders". However, cell phone usage in the school building has made this very difficult for many of our students. Even though we do have a cell phone policy, many students find ways around using their phones to connect to social media and games during class time and throughout the school building.

Unfortunately, cell phone use has increased cyber-bullying, lack of motivation, and constant distraction.

With some students I have made arrangements with parents to collect their phone in the morning and return to them at dismissal. The improvement has been astounding. Students are focused during class time, physical and verbal altercations have decreased, and behavior has improved.

By funding this project it will allow me to collect more cell phones and keep them locked up safely in my office. It will set up more students to have a productive and successful school day where they can be dedicated to living the I.S. 5 mission.
