My Project

A Calming Corner is an essential part of my office as a School Adjustment Counselor. Students visit my office for a variety of reasons, but often it is to have a safe space to discuss serious issues, feel valued, be heard, and rejuvenate. When students are not emotionally and socially grounded, learning is impacted and academics suffer.

The bean bag chairs, which I currently have but need replacement of, will offer comfortable seating for students in a small crowded office, and the rug will serve to enhance the overall "peaceful" atmosphere I am hoping to create.

The Little Spot book set of emotions will be utilized with the youngest of my students who have difficulty identifying emotions and feelings.

Due to the volume of students I need to counsel during the school year, I feel an inviting space will encourage more conversation for those who are dealing with issues relating to separation, divorce, grief, dysfunctional home-life and foster care. Since COVID, there has been an overall increase in anxiety and depression in elementary students. As a School Adjustment Counselor I am an advocate for all of the awesome students in my school. I am a neutral adult in the building to help them with their burdens and my office is their safe harbor.
