Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I read a book this summer that changed my life. It was about women around the world who are oppressed. The stories are heart-wrenching but also offer glimpses of hope. I realized that I wanted to spend the next year teaching my kids about making a difference in the world.

My students are high school seniors.

They are smart, witty, and full of vigor. They are curious and giving. They are also very poor. My students live in the poorest congressional district in the country. Most of them qualify for free lunch and many of them live below the poverty line. Yet, they are happy. They believe in the kindness of others and they see the beauty in everything. I care about them very much.

My Project

I want to combine two of the things I care about the most: my students and the world. I decided to change my curriculum to be one that addresses global issues and has an activism component. After each unit we will write letters through Amnesty International or raise money for an organization that we believe is doing great things. But I am an English teacher and I need the tools to educate my kids. One of my units is on repression and one is on human trafficking. I am requesting books that will give my students insight into these issues and that will spark lively discussion. I know that upon reading about these issues my students will want to mobilize and help cure some of the problems ailing this world.

Please support my project.

I feel that in making a high school senior English class a place where students receive the tools to make a difference in the world is a beautiful thing. There is nothing I believe in more than educating selfless youth who care about the world. I know that my students have not had a lot of advantages and reading these stories will help them understand that although the world is a complicated and cruel place, it does not have to be.
