Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school I work in is considered a high-needs, low-income school with 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Located in the East Village of Manhattan, New York, each student from my class comes from very diverse backgrounds. Our school is part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) services offered to students who need them. As educators, we know that students learn in many different ways, and it benefits them to learn visually. Unfortunately, our school cannot provide classrooms with all the supports and technologies needed in order for students to learn in a variety of different ways. The students in my class are some of the most hard-working children I have ever had the chance to meet. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds, where tools and technology are greatly limited.

Providing students with the tools they need to succeed is my major goal for the school-year.

Our school funding is limited, and we really appreciate all the support we can get!

My Project

My students are everyday explorers. They love learning about new things and conducting experiments to test their knowledge. Currently in our class, we are discussing ways that we can help the Earth grow. We decided to plant flowers, and help raise caterpillars into beautiful butterflies! Before deciding on this insect, my students were interested in discovering how raising butterflies in our classroom was possible. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they brainstormed ideas was a wonderful experience, and I hope to foster their interest by obtaining these insects for them to grow.

My students learn about many different life cycles in their science class, and are interested in watching the life cycle happen before their very eyes!

I believe that with this experiment, I can help them develop a strong interest in science, all the while encouraging their excitement.

Recently, we were able to purchase 5 Amazon Fire tablets for my classroom. These tablets will allow students to work on interactive reading programs, such as Lexia and Myon. Many of the students in my classroom do not have proper access to the technology that can help them reach new levels of success, so these tablets will give students a tremendous advantage! We are also asking for 5 protective cases, so that students can work on these tablets and keep them protected and easy to hold. Thank you for supporting our classroom!
