A Bug's Life

When did you discover the natural world and marvel at its wonders? My students need these habitats for direct experiences, which would be possible with beetles, hermit crabs and termites.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What could inspire the next generation of naturalists, zoologists and conservationists more than a living museum in the science lab? I would like to establish a museum of invertebrates in my school. Animals without backbones present a humane way to allow careful exploration of the living world.

My students live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood in New York City.

More than 95% of the population receives free school lunch, and face the challenge of speaking another language at home. Their urban neighborhood is rich in buildings and projects, and poor in parks and green spaces. The opportunity to interact with the living world is therefore very limited. In addition, their parents keep their children from playing in the mud, and rightly so. Their backyards are really just small patches of weeds growing in front of their buildings. What's more, I would classify it as dirt, and not soil. I, too, would not allow a child to make discoveries in these few patches of dirt and weeds.

My Project

I would like to set up habitats that include many kinds of bugs: the sow bugs, millipedes, pill bugs, Bess bugs, hermit crabs and termites. These habitats can be carefully monitored and maintained in the science lab by my 300+ students, as I teach all grades from Kindergarten to grade 5. In addition, the habitats will touch the lives and inspire a new generation of scientists. Did you know that termites will march single file along a circle drawn on paper? My students would be able to observe animal behavior, closely observe animal movement, how animals eat, and their life cycles with this grant.

Please help me to capitalize on the natural sense of wonder that elementary students possess.

If we can capture their attention at such a young age, and hold this attention, we can grow the next generation of scientists. Allow me to do so with your kind contribution.
