Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I started a basketball club at my school last year to provide a safe and accessible environment where my students could attend and be themselves. I often ask my students what they do for self-care or to de-stress. Most students, particularly my male students of color would say they play basketball. One student stated, “Playing basketball brings me joy and helps me relax when I am stressed or feeling down.”

Research proves that sports can positively impact students’ mental health.

Regular participation in sports can improve mental health and happiness as it allows students to maintain a level of physical activity. Sports can also help improve self-esteem and reduce depression, anxiety, and stress. However many students expressed that most do not have free access to high-quality facilities and equipment in their neighborhoods. Some students' parents do not feel comfortable letting them play in neighboring parks. The club runs on Saturdays so that students have somewhere to go on their weekends to spend time with their friends and play a game that they love. Our sports club is unique in that we do not compete against other teams. Rather our club serves as a safe space where students of all grades and all genders can participate. Thanks to the club, I have seen relationships grow between our students across cohorts.

All children deserve the right to enjoy sports in a safe environment with access to high-quality equipment for free! Your donations would allow us to provide our students with the equipment needed to support their mental health and improve their self-esteem by playing a game they love. The basketball club acts as a channel for our students to regulate their emotions and embrace collaboration as they grow personally and navigate personal and professional relationships.
