Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Lights up on some of the most dramatic and talented middle schoolers in all of New York! My middle schoolers are all talented performers in a Title 1 public school with a dance focus. My students range from ages 11 - 14 and around 75% of them qualify for a free lunch every day. We serve many special education students as well as students who learn English as a second language. I teach art and social studies, but last year I started our school's very first Theater Club. It was a lot of hard work, but the kids rose to the challenge and performed an original play that they wrote themselves!

This year we'd love to take it up a notch with a full blown musical production of the classic "Annie"! This is a fantastic play for my students because it deals with themes of homelessness, broken families and the promise of a better life just around the corner, subjects some of these kids are all too familiar with. Musical theatre can be very expensive with each performance costing hundreds of dollars due to show rights and royalties. The show kit I picked is absolutely the least expensive version we can find. However, in our district's financial crisis, teachers at my school are not even being supplied paper much less enrichment activities such as musical theatre shows. There is simply no way our school can afford to do any type of musical theatre.

The Annie Jr. show kit is a perfect fit for our students because it puts the music in a key that is realistic for teenage singers, gives the directors clear audition and rehearsal material and doesn't even require a live orchestra for a full dramatic effect. This kit includes: a Director's Script, Production Handbook, 2 Piano/Vocal Books, 20 Student Librettos, Cross-Curricular Activities and Enrichment Guide, 2 Performance CDs, Choreography Video and 10 Chorus Books.

Your help will allow these Middle School students to shine on stage, and the skills that they will learn as performers will be invaluable in multiple areas of their lives. The show must go on!
