I teach kindergarten and in my classroom we spend about 70% of our day sitting on the carpet. The children sit there together for our morning meeting, they sit on the carpet for story telling and reading mini-lessons, they gather on the carpet for writing and math, and for leisure activities (like puzzles, self-selected reading, games, etc.). My carpet has been in my classroom for many years. It was there prior to my arrival which was three years ago. As you can imagine, it has seen a lot of wear and tear, and it is now smelly and impossible to clean properly. It also contributes to having dirt and dust in the air which is a health concern. Every time I vacuum it I see powdery particles go out into our classroom environment, and it never looks clean. It is very hard to get my school to clean the carpet, and when they do it still never looks clean. I have many kids with asthma, and this school serves students in low-income neighborhoods. School should provide them with a clean, safe environment. I thought I was getting a new carpet this year, but when over thirty carpets arrived and were distributed, they went to the upper grades and other rooms, and my room was left out. A new carpet in my classroom would make the children more comfortable. I am asking for funding to purchase a high-quality carpet designed especially for classroom use. It is extremely stain resistant for easy cleaning, and anti-bacterially treated to protect kids. The carpet is made from dense nylon fibers so it is tough and durable. It has a happy caterpillars and alphabet letters design -- a colorful motif that makes an inviting environment for the children that also helps them learn their ABCs! Year after year, my kindergarten class would really benefit during circle time and all our other daytime activities with the addition of a new, clean carpet to the classroom. Thank You.
