My Project
Learning to play music is one of the most important parts of music class! As a K-8 general music teacher without a classroom, I try to bring music-making to all my students despite the limitations of teaching on a cart. Since I don't have any class sets of instruments, we rarely get to play them during class as there just aren't enough to go around. Recently we have been learning to read notes in treble and bass clef, which is the foundation of playing music. Boomwhackers, which are tuned pipes that play a note when hit, would be the perfect way to teach my students to translate notes to an instrument. They are engaging, easy to use, and would last many years as they are practically impossible to break. I inherited a set of eight boomwhackers from the previous music teacher, but this isn't enough for a whole class to play at the same time. As you might imagine, this creates a host of problems: rotating instruments fairly between students, ensuring each student has enough time with the instrument and keeping students engaged when it is not their turn to play. We are also missing the excitement of making music as a whole class!
By donating to our project, you will help my students experience the joy of taking music from the page to the real world.
My students have been working hard to learn their notes, and I know that being able to make music would bring new energy to our classes. My students are always extra excited when I bring an instrument to demonstrate for them, and they would be ecstatic to play some themselves!
