My Students

I am one of two Library Media Specialists at my high school, an urban public school serving grades 9-12. I am responsible for curating materials, technology education and maintenance, along with all facets of the Library's day to day operation.

More than 65% of my students receive free or reduced lunch.

A vast number are English Language Learners, and are first generation Americans. They are athletes, musicians, actors, and artists. Over 1500 students walk the same halls I did. I am proud to live and teach in the same community I grew up in and where I raised my son. My counterpart and I want our students to develop of a love of reading.

My Project

Our two existing book carts are more than ten years old. Despite WD-40 on a regular basis, they barely turn and make horrid noises. They are scratched and have graffiti removal stains. Our work study students, responsible for transporting books requested by classroom teachers from our collection, sometimes prefer to make several trips carrying the books in their arms rather than fight with our existing trucks. Having this new, fully functional cart will allow us to move materials from our location to classrooms throughout the building.

In order for students to read our books and utilize materials for research and enrichment, the materials need to be transported.

At the current time, this is made more difficult by the condition of our carts. A new cart will help us institute Sustained Silent Reading along with supporting research and citation lessons in the classroom. Thank you for choosing to support us!
