This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are an energetic bunch of 12 yr olds who enjoy learning about themselves and how they fit into the world. They are a mature group who appreciate when our social and emotional lessons are tied to situations and or conflicts they recently experienced. A topic we have revisited multiple times this year is Equality vs Equity. I hope this fictional read will intrigue students with Lowry’s painted picture of a utopian society through the eyes of 12 yr old Jonas.

Inequality, divorce, and conflict are topics constantly presented in my students' lives, they are topics that they are trying to understand and have questions about.

I feel they will connect with the main character as he too has questions of his society. Subsequently, I am confident this book will engross students’ through critical thinking of their own reality. This novel is intended to intrigue and inspire a variety of readers in my classroom cohesively with social-emotional learning.
