My Students

“Ms. R, Do you think I’m stupid?” “Why do I have to read baby books?!” “What does Special Ed mean?” “I don’t want to bring my book to read home, people will laugh at me on the bus” These are questions and statements I constantly hear from my students on a daily basis.

I teach third grade special education in New York.

My students are diagnosed with multiple disabilities including: speech and language impaired, learning disabled, autistic, emotionally disturbed, ADHD, and other health impairments. Unfortunately, my students come into my third grade room on a kindergarten to first grade reading level. Usually their reading confidences are very low, and have a “giving up” type of attitude. My goal is to introduce them to the world of reading, and have them grow a passion and enjoy it! I always tell my students that something I do when I am sad or feel as if I need to get away is read a book, and it takes me to another place.

My Project

I feel a listening center would benefit my students because they will be able to read books that their peers are reading throughout the grade with the support of a CD. They will not feel as if their only option is “baby books”, because sadly there are not many books available that are age appropriate for a 9 year old yet on a kindergarten reading level. I truly want my students to feel confident, smart, and know they can do anything. I would love to instill the joy of reading at this young age! Please help me to do so!

I believe that with support we can truly change the lives of children.

I want my students to believe in themselves. I want to show them that not only I, but many people care for them, love them, and believe in them to succeed. Please be one of those people who believe!
