Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Language Arts Teacher for the Seventh and Eighth grades. I am in an urban school located in Trenton, New Jersey. Most of our families are living at or below poverty level. Buying books and having quality books in the home is a struggle in our neighborhood.

I have found that getting students to read is a difficult task. Many students see reading as a chore. I want to instill in their lives that reading is not only for education but also for enjoyment. We are beginning a journey that focuses on reading daily. Many of my students need more reading materials at home. They are constantly telling me that they have nothing to read at home or that what they have is not interesting. I struggle every day trying to teach my students that reading is fun.

I am in need of many quality trade books that I could give to my students to have at home. I want them to enjoy the gift of reading and be able to say with pride that they have many wonderful things to read at home. Having books at home would not only give them something to read but also model for their younger siblings that reading is not a chore but a gift, a pleasure.

Your help will give my students the books that they so desperately need. I am asking for them to begin a personal library that they can be proud of. I want them to turn to each other and talk about the things that they are reading in their homes. I want them to become a community of readers. This community can not grow without you help.
