Help me give my students 21 copies of Giant Squid, 21 copies of The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau and 11 copies of Ocean Sunlight to use during whole group reading.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Students need to be involved in their learning so that they can take ownership of what they are doing. Students need to get their hands "dirty" by using them to research, create, and make learning meaningful. I teach about 18 eager, energetic third-grade students in my classroom this year. We are a Title I school which means 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program. All of our students are eager to learn and need experiences that they do not get at home. Many of our children come from single-parent homes.
Our school is in close proximity to a major military base; we serve many students who come from active and retired military families.
I also help run the Entreneural Club at our school. Students are tasked with planning, designing, and creating items to sell at school functions. Our students have made many items such as t-shirts, personalized bears, stickers, and decals. Our club uses the "profits" to help with school beautification projects. They are so proud to take ownership of their club growth!
My Project
My students are in need of class sets of books to go along with our Wit and Wisdom Curriculum. Ocean Sunlight, Giant Squid, and The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau are books that we read during the school year. As a class, we only have 1 - 5 copies of these texts to share with my students depending on the title. It is a struggle for students to answer text-dependent questions when they do not have the text in front of them. Putting these books in their hands will help empower them to dive deeper into a story. By having the text in front of them, students will have a better understanding of the story and better learn the skills I am teaching while exploring the books.
