This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the inner city and 90% of them live in low-income housing. They are eager to learn, which is demonstrated in their attendance. My students have limited exposure to real life scenarios which inhibits them in relating to most reading materials.
I teach at a Title One School in Richmond, Virginia, where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My school services approximately 400 students, who are predominately African-American. Our school is serviced by Community in Schools, which is a program based on reducing high pregnancy rates in low-income demographics.
My Project
Having the paired studies for fiction and nonfiction will give my students the opportunity to read books that are on their level. This project will assist me in having the necessary materials to meet the wide range of students' needs in my class. My students have limited exposure, so it's important to present them with books with connections to real life. These books will give each student the opportunity to read something enjoyable that will aide them to learn on their level. Student choice is an important aspect of reading; giving them an opportunity to choose, will have a positive impact on their desire to read more often.
