My Students

Where were you when you realized for the first time that you could write? Do you remember the feeling of elation you had at that moment of discovery? Last year, I ran out of markers by January. Current budget cuts are having a detrimental impact on my school’s ability to provide materials.

My students are a lovely, motivated and curious bunch of second and third grade children who live in an urban area.

Coming from mostly Latino backgrounds, they often struggle with comprehension, production and the acquisition of the English language. Having tactile experiences, particularly through the arts, can help to close these gaps. Furthermore, when they are provided with meaningful and purposeful writing experiences, like publishing their own work, that allow them to apply what they have learned, their language growth is phenomenal. Helping a child find their voice as a writer, can be a challenging but necessary task for a teacher. Provided with the right opportunities and materials, however, children can uncover their voices very early in their education. This helps tremendously with intellectual growth and self-esteem, especially for children acquiring the English language.

My Project

Every day, real authors have their work published and celebrated regularly. It is considered a great accomplishment. My students can uncover their potential as authors, in the same way, and realize their capacity as current creators, not just future writers and illustrators. My students should be able to share and publish their written work regularly using beautiful colors and paper. They should be able to see their own growth as writers from the beginning of the year to the end of the school year. Last year, my students published mobile puppet fiction stories. I remember the pride spreading over their faces as they used their imagination and creativity to create these beautifully illustrated books using a range of materials. This project was a huge success for my students!! This is an experience I want to be able to give them over and over. Imagine the sense of empowerment you would feel if you could choose from a rainbow of colors for an illustration you were about to create.

As their educator, I can give them the real-life experience of publishing a piece of writing and having their work celebrated.

Providing my students with a variety of artistic material like makers, staplers and construction paper and card stock, will ignite their true potential as authors and illustrators. So, close your eyes and imagine the squeals of delight when a student can say "Abuelo, I am a real-life author and illustrator. Look, at this book I just wrote."
