My Students

My middle school students are bright, funny, and engaging, and they love their library! They come from a Los Angeles neighborhood where many struggle with poverty, language barriers, and the realities of modern urban life.

Our library program is committed to educating all students with a focus on teaching college and career ready skills, encouraging personal growth, promoting lifelong learning, and honoring diversity.

Our school’s enrollment is approximately 1,500 students, and the library serves the entire school population. All of the students at our school receive federal breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, approximately 26% of the students are English language learners. There is a group foster home right across the street from our school, so a number of our students are foster youth. Approximately 15% of our students have special needs, as we have a variety of great Special Education programs at our school. Our school's ethnic makeup reflects the diversity of the surrounding community: Latino, African American, Asian, and Caucasian.

My Project

My students are eager and avid readers. The fiction section of the library is by far the most popular. Unfortunately, the average date of our library's fiction section is 2000, 20 years old, and is in need of a refresh.

An updated, culturally relevant, and engaging fiction section will provide my students with all of the benefits of reading fiction, such as an increased vocabulary, greater mental focus, a sense of empathy, and a boost in creativity.

My students intensely enjoy reading fiction from a physical book. They are also keen on reading the latest titles. In our neighborhood, it's challenging for the students to get to the public library. They rely on our school library for their fiction fix. With your help, my students will soon be reading new stories that I hope will encourage them to be life-long readers and seekers of knowledge.
