My Project

If we want kids to be good readers, we must help them fall in love with reading. One of the easiest ways is to read aloud great books.

"A Bear Called Paddington" by Michael Bond, is the first book in the Paddington series.

The opportunity arrived for me to shift from being a 3rd-grade teacher to a 2nd-grade teacher next year. Professionally and personally, this change is very exciting! It has also created the need to find new class read-aloud. And I love finding the perfect read-aloud.

A favorite part of the day in my classroom is read-aloud time. This is the time when my class gathers together, all with a book in hand, and students listen to a story being read to them. Reading aloud to students allows them to listen to a fluent reader, thus building their listening vocabulary. We work through a variety of comprehension activities after each chapter or section of our read-aloud book.

"A Bear Called Paddington" has so much of what I am looking for in a read-aloud (plus more that I am not specifically looking for!)- it includes sequels (I love setting the stage for students to want more books). It is set in London, England (I love London!...city and/or country social studies possibilities). It has multiple food references (mostly marmalade!...snack possibilities during the movie watching). It involves a stuffed bear (teddy bear day and science unit about real bears). HRH Queen Elizabeth made little videos with Paddington (I personally enjoy all things British royalty). And...this book has been made into a movie- which opens up compare/contrast or opinion writing opportunities but is mostly a perfect culminating activity to finishing the book.
