"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution" - Albert Einstein
This quote continuously resonates in my head, strengthened each day by the unmistakable talent and curiosity of my students.
I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to not just teach these students, but also to have the privilege of getting to know them. Each day I interact with them, I am amazed at how innovative, curious, and adept each student is. I feel obligated to create this account on Donors Choose in order to encourage my capable student's limitless creativity and potential.
This class is designed to give students the confidence to solve any problem that life might throw their way. By learning through their hands, the students will be connected to the world and given the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge, and passion to take on any obstacle. By expanding this program to encompass charitable projects, I believe that my students will move beyond developing their own talents to find ways to use their skills to improve the lives of others.
My Project
Our project allows students to gain experience in the latest technology of 3D printing while helping underprivileged children around the world. Every prosthetic hand we make is sent, free-of-charge, to a child who is unable to obtain a formal device, which usually costs thousands. These children were either born without hands, or have lost them due to injury or sickness.
Materials such as braces, ties, and filament will allow my students to make a variety of 3D printed prosthetic hands, using online designs through a specific website and our school's 3D printing lab.
After students learn to edit computer files of hands, print the prosthetic pieces, and properly assemble the devices, they are assigned a specific recipient which they create a device for. These recipients contact our school via an online web network set up through the non-profit network we collaborate with. Student gain an insightful experience when they are able to see how their work has impacted a specific child.
While the base of our project has been set up and a first few test hands made, the supplies above will allow us to make over thirty prosthetic hands for those in need. Not only are the students from my class excited to become involved, but also our school's S.T.E.M. and 3D printing clubs. Please help to educate and prepare my students for careers in S.T.E.M, while making an impact on the lives all those who receive a device.
