My Students

When was the last time you listened to a cassette? In my classroom, we are still living in the Dark Ages. Our listening center consists of a twenty-year-old tape player. This severely outdated technology restricts my students' potential to maximize their morning literacy instruction.

I teach first grade special education in a low-income New York City public school.

Many of my students enter my classroom as struggling readers. At age 6, they are already coping with a variety of challenges such as learning disabilities and language barriers, making learning to read all the more difficult. My students are from families struggling to make ends meet and, unfortunately, in these difficult economic times, books aren't always the top priority on every family's list. Because many of my students don't have books at home, their only opportunity to access literacy materials is at school.

My Project

I am requesting six headsets and two headphone splitters so that my students can work in two groups of three to utilize their two classroom Kindle e-readers during centers time. Additionally, I am requesting two stands on which the Kindles can be placed. These resources will allow us to completely replace our cassette-based reading center. This will make the reading experience truly come to life by bringing 21st century technology into the classroom. Importantly, my students will now be able to read along with the Kindles' text-to-speech function, improving their decoding and comprehension skills.

GIven the importance of literacy, one of my main goals as a first grade teacher is to try to make reading exciting.

I believe that integrating technology into our literacy block helps to achieve this goal and these resources will further enrich the experience.
