My Students

Unstoppable laughter, tears, and emotions running wild in the classroom....all from a BOOK!!! Sherman Alexie is THE author to convince 9th graders that reading can be fun and exciting, even for those who are reluctant to read anything at all.

These inner-city public school children (TN) are in desperate need of access to a book they can relate to and connect with so that they don't dread reading for the remaining high school years; reluctance to read will cause them to suffer across the board.

Many of them are from inner-city "neighborhoods" and have not been raised around books/reading. Our school is moving to one of the top 3 in the district, but our data shows that we are still failing to meet the needs of our struggling readers/learners. This book makes reading and learning accessible for them, and they LOVE it. Actually, last year several copies that I had of this book were taken from my classroom by my so-called reluctant readers because they couldn't wait any longer in class to finish it!!! They wanted to take it home and read it on their own! How awesome is that? Hearing, "Ms. H...that's the 1st book I ever read and loved!" shows that Sherman Alexie's novel DOES have the capacity to break "the cycle"!!!

My Project

My ninth graders have sadly been conditioned to resist reading in their middle school years. You know, it isn't "cool" to read anymore (in their minds, at least). It's my mission to change this cycle, and Sherman Alexie's book makes HUGE steps in the right direction. The 9th grade year is really the last chance to turn them on to reading, and this is one of several books that I have used in the past to do just that. A class set of this book would bring joy into the lives of 160 students on a daily basis and make English class accessible, fun, and exciting for them. Themes covered include bullying, racism, education, poverty, importance of family, growing up/maturing, honesty, team spirit, and a wealth of cultural knowledge about Native Americans that most of them would never obtain otherwise. We'd like to read this book and then take a field trip to an actual Native American Pow-Wow afterwards in Nashville. So many connections will be made between 9th graders and this novel!

Your contribution has the capacity to change the lives of these 9th graders!

It only takes that ONE good book to make students realize the power of reading. Once they are willing to read, they will find themselves being more successful across the board in all classes and, most importantly, on standardized tests. Do you remember YOUR favorite book from high school? Your contribution will give my English I students the opportunity to create their favorite reading memory for years to come!
