My Project

My students are inquisitive by nature and bring unique perspectives to the classroom through their varied lived experiences. For some students who have fled conflict themselves, this unit reflects their experience, for other students this unit gives them a new perspective.

In this unit, all 7th graders read a book about a refugee.

Each student in the group reads a different book about a person or character who has had to flee their country due to unsafe conditions. Together the students learn about different places and conflicts but they also compare the similar experiences that many refugees have. Through this unit, students work on their reading and comparison skills, learn about geography and contemporary or historical conflicts. Students also work on their speaking and listening skills during this month-long project.

I am excited that all seventh graders will be doing this unit this year but that means that I will need enough books so that each student can have their own copy.
