My Project

The students that I teach are 12 and 13 years old. I have more than 100 students coming into and out of my classroom each day and they expect to be challenged. They want to do their best work in class and show me what they are capable of. Everyday they are learning new ways to improve their writing craft and reading skills. This year the students in my class will be reading a wide range of age appropriate novels from a variety of genres. Reading is fundamental and the students read for both enjoyment and as a part of book clubs and workshops.

The power of book clubs made up of four to five students each in my classroom has proven to be the most beneficial way to teach reading skills, critical thinking skills, and accountable discussion skills.

I often have students ask me if I have additional books from authors they connect with, issues they care about, more difficult books to help them improve their reading skills, and books they can enjoy reading with partners or small groups.

We read everyday in class and having a classroom library to support their eagerness for more and more reading material is vital.
