Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting the novel, "Holes" by Louis Sachar, to have a novel study with my fifth graders. Because this a compelling story with rich themes, my students will benefit in exploring themes, such as friendship, justice, perseverance, fate vs. free will, and the power of history, providing them with valuable lessons that extend beyond the classroom.

The novel’s structure, with its interwoven storylines and flashbacks, will challenge my students to think critically about cause and effect, character connections, and narrative techniques.

Additionally, it will help my students enhance their vocabulary and literary analysis skills. Holes exposes students to descriptive language, figurative speech, and literary devices such as foreshadowing and irony, helping them deepen their understanding of storytelling.

Finally, this will engage all of my readers, which is the hook that I most rely on to cultivate lifelong readers. With a "love what you read" attitude, my students have been learning to connect with what they're reading, in order to love it. With its mix of humor, adventure, and suspense, "Holes" captivates a wide range of learners, making it accessible for both my reluctant and advanced readers.

My goals for this project are to develop reading comprehension skills, enhance critical thinking, strengthen writing and discussion skills, encourage text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world connections, and encourage a love for reading.

What makes my students so special is their thirst for knowledge, their solid dependability, and their resilience. My students are readily prepared for class and know how to work both independently and collaboratively.
