My Students

Our school is a diverse, urban public school where students enrich our programs with their experiences. Our K-8 population reaches 500 students, and half qualify for free lunch.

Within our walls, you will see children from dozens of countries, bringing just as many different languages and cultures.

As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Through a variety of learning experiences, students are able to excel in ways that tap into their individual potential.

My Project

Students in 8th grade will have a unique opportunity to study physical science through investigating real-(out of this)-world scenarios! Andy Weir's novel The Martian was recently adapted to a classroom edition, and I am excited to use this novel to take my students on a year-long Mission to Mars!

In this multidisciplinary journey, students will reference The Martian as they design experiments, collect data, and engineer solutions just like a real astronaut.

Could Mark Watney really have grown potatoes for food? Would his space suit be able to protect him from the sun's radiation? Students will investigate to find the answers for themselves.
