Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of inner city children. They are overflowing with talent and intelligence that can change their communities and the world. Helping them understand this is crucial to their survival and that of their communities. This year, I aim to help them discover that as they get involved within our classroom.

When the bell rings at 9:10, my students rambunctiously file into class.

They are filled with a vast amount of energy, yet they come in with an effort to make sure that class flows well. They strive to ensure that they learn as much as they can for the year. They try their best to not let the problems of life get the best of them. For example, some of my students have a harsh home life. But their spirit is so strong and high, they enter the room and they give their best to succeed. Even the ones that may come in to the classroom with low spirits or just not motivated to be in class that day. I watch as these students bravely pull themselves out of depression and doubt, and they lose themselves in the learning taking place in class.

My Project

My students will be able to witness the physical manifestation of imaginary beings, worlds, and ideas. This will give them a way to compare their interpretations to those of the original writers, and gain a deeper understanding of storytelling, world building, and literature in general.

Students will explore settings, witness shows, and experience rides that previously existed solely in the imagination.

This will serve not only to rekindle a passion of writing and storytelling, but also as an incentive for those in whom the passion already exists. By the end of this trip, all of my students will have gained a new appreciation for literature through the tales they already love.

Ms. H. Madison Middle School Grades 6-8
