Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from low-income and poverty-stricken families in the inner city on the Connecticut shoreline. They struggle with hardships that most could not even begin to fathom. That being said, most of my students do not have access to novels though most are avid readers - even if they don't want to admit it. In order to give my students a break from the anchor texts we read as a whole group, I designate every Friday as an independent reading day where students get to delve into a novel of their choice.

These novels give them a chance to remove themselves from the chaos of their world and vicariously experience something different and exciting through the characters... and they LOVE it!

Seeing my diverse group of teenage students curled up with a book all around my classroom makes me so proud to be their teacher. Even more so when their hands shoot up to enthusiastically share the newest developments in their novels. If I can open up the world to them through literature, there is no telling what incredible things they will accomplish in the future.

My Project

Working with children that come from low-income and poverty-stricken families has opened my eyes to the struggles that they deal with daily. Many of my students don’t have reliable access to basic school supplies, nevermind books.

In order to ensure my students develop a love for literature, I am looking for donations to add high-interest, challenging young adult novels to my classroom library that my 8th grade students will borrow for their independent reading.

Purchasing these books is particularly important to me as these children do not have books of their own at home and rely on my collection to read, learn, and grow. With every novel my students read cover to cover, they will expand their vocabulary, broaden their understanding of the world, and develop a love for reading.

Please help me make my students feel that they matter and can achieve any goal that they set for themselves with a little hard work and dedication. Any donation, large or small, will help make that difference. Thank you so much for your support.
