Motivating Readers With Manga

My Project
My students love to read! They read all genres from fiction and memoir to nonfiction and graphic novels. This year, more and more students are requesting that we purchase additional manga books for the library collection. Manga are comics and graphic novels that originated in Japan.
Manga offers numerous benefits beyond entertainment. Manga is visual storytelling combined with text. This format increases comprehension and vocabulary. Manga also provides opportunities for cultural awareness as many stories depict Japanese traditions and social issues. These books also enhance students' critical thinking skills as the themes tend to be more complex.
In addition, some students who may shy away from traditional literature find manga to be more appealing and engaging; thus sparking a love of reading they may not have discovered through other books.
My goal as a teacher librarian is to get kids hooked on reading. I believe these books will help to enrich my students' educational experience through a different yet dynamic form of storytelling!
