7th grade is a formative time for students to become lifelong readers. Students are more likely to enjoy reading when they have texts that represent themselves, their culture, and their experiences. Although mythology may seem distant to our 7th graders, there has been some amazing work done by YA authors to share the stories of diverse mythology for middle grade students.
You may have heard of Rick Riordin and the Percy Jackson series, but did you know he collaborates with a range of diverse authors to bring to light even more stories centered around mythology?
My teaching partner and I want to bring these incredible stories to our 7th graders so they have the opportunity to engage with magical stories that will enhance the Mythology unit we teach. At the end of this unit, students will be creating their own original myths, and having mentor texts with diverse representation of mythology that students can reference and learn from will help students see themselves in story building, sharing, and the practice of creating mythology as a whole.
Funding this project will impact the entire 7th grade at Stewart Middle School, as they will all be reading one of these books every day throughout our mythology unit. To help support our students to see themselves represented, please donate to our Donorschoose! Thank you!
