My Project
One of the priorities in first grade is learning about phonemes, the smallest units of sounds in a word, and graphemes, the written letter or letters that represent those sounds. There’s a lot more to this than simply learning the 26 letters of the alphabet, since many sounds in English can be represented by more than one grapheme. For example, my students explore four different ways to make the /k/ sound, the different ways to pronounce the “ed” at the end of past tense verbs, and why “s” sometimes makes a /z/ sound at the end of plural nouns. A deep understanding of these and many other foundational phonics skills has long-term benefits for students in both reading and writing.
This class set of orthographic magnetic tiles and boards will provide engaging, hands-on opportunities for my students to practice critical phonics skills, including letter sounds, blends, digraphs, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, and suffixes.
Each set of tiles includes 76 phonemes, which will allow me to differentiate lessons to meet a variety of student needs: more challenging words for my stronger students and valuable extra practice of basic skills for my struggling learners. Repeated practice helps students to solidify skills and build confidence in literacy tasks.
In addition to providing support for the students in my class, I am planning to use these orthographic tile kits with our first-grade intervention students. All students enjoy engaging, hands-on lessons, but our struggling readers especially need interactive and high-interest experiences to build foundational skills. I think these tile boards will provide an opportunity for practice and reinforcement that will be helpful to many students. I appreciate your support of this project, and I am looking forward to putting them to good use with my students.
