Please help me create a warm and welcoming environment, complete with fun games and activities to engage our multilingual learners! All materials will help to supplement our Language Power lessons, which cover grade K-5 in six different language levels.
Studies show that kids learn through playing games.
Games like Guess Who Animals encourage practice with forming the sentence structure needed for interrogative (question) sentences. Asking yes/no questions about animal attributes provides practice with vocabulary that is taught in the Language Power curriculum.
Blah Blah Blah provides phonemic awareness practice deconstructing words into beginning, middle, and end sounds. Splat offers practice with sight words. These are an important supplement to our curriculum as early reading skills are touched on in the lower levels of our curriculum, but are needed for upper grade newcomers as well.
The Alphabet Tubs are a great way to introduce vocabulary in a fun and tactile way. Each tub includes a word bank on the lid for increased literacy practice. Items can be hidden in a Mystery Box where students can touch the items and guess what they are without looking. Students love this fun and interactive vocabulary practice approach! This game is especially great with newcomers who speak little or no English, as they can engage all of their senses and focus on a few vocabulary words related to a common beginning sound.
I am also requesting Teach Us Your Name is a book by Huda Essa, who is featured in a Language Power unit on American immigrants. This is also a great book to start the year and help honor students' names.
Finally, I am requesting stickers as an incentive for students to earn each time they come to work in their pullout English Language Development group to make them excited to learn!
