This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you were so sure of your world? As an urban school my students find that their lives are so diverse and challenging that they tend to feel isolated from the norm. Well, that is at least until they can create their own guide to the galaxy.

My students are active learners who need a new way to express themselves.

They want to communicate with peers, teachers and parents. The goal is to foster opportunities to capture a moment and express what they've learned. Along the way they can look back and see how they've grown. They are also excellent teachers. However, they struggle, as an urban public school to voice an opinion. They tend to two extremes. Either they'd rather not get noticed or noticed for all the wrong reasons. Either way there is loss for growing and sharing. They struggle for the attention they deserve as intelligent individuals who all have something to contribute.

My Project

The digital camera that is requested is so students can document their year--a picture journal or scrapbook. The software requested, as well as the guide books, will help them put it all together. This year the seventh grade teachers have come together to allow for more field trips for our students. The classroom should not be limited to four walls. My advisory will put together a compilation of these experiences. They will also take pictures of things words aren't sufficient enough to communicate. Words like character, bullying, cooperation as well as growth will be a focus study. My advisory will put together a photo album showing other students entering the seventh grade the challenges they faced and how they survived them. They will also see for themselves the positive effect of building a community. The pictures they create and take will foster a dialog not always easy to engage in. Such a discussion will be, “What is bullying?” and “How can we handle it?”

We'd like to build a larger sense of community and responsibility.

Our pictures will show how we develop a mindset that says, "Yes we can." More importantly, our pictures will be the prompt for many discussions we will have with each other throughout our journey. In the end it isn't the "how do we take pictures," but why are they important to us and why are they necessary.
