My Students

7th grade social studies in my classroom focuses on asking and answering tough questions, ones that don't always have clear, easy, or "right" answers. A typical day involves written and oral exploration of ideas. Students debate ideas with each other and with me!

Students come from all over the world and represent the diverse population of our city.

The one thing they have in common is an eagerness to learn and express their ideas and creativity. Our school focuses on building community and creating lifelong learners. My students are learning to track their own development as we progress through the writing process. They are able to monitor the skills they have mastered. They also understand the skills they need to practice. They are also eager to access content and learning opportunities in a variety of ways that go beyond traditional textbooks.

My Project

I will use the iPad to track student progress in real time and to allow students to track and view their own progress. Students can use it for on demand research. There are apps and videos I will use to illustrate historical events and upcoming elections. Students will also be using the tablet to record their progress. The tablet will be accessible to the class. When students have mastered a skill, they will have the chance to record it. The students can then take on the next writing/historical challenge. This system allows me to easily monitor their progress and provide the needed assistance to my developing writers and historians.

Having access to this technology will help my students become more independent as they progress as writers and historians.

My goal is to make the writing and historical research process a rewarding one. The tablet will allow students to easily and concretely acknowledge their successes as they develop. It will also allow students to access historical events in more visual and stimulating ways.
