Building Classroom Community Through Play

My Project

All students want to feel connected to their classmates. One way to build this connection is through play. Each week students have a chance to play with each other during free choice. This is a time where students get to be kids and play. During this time they are practicing problem solving skills, communication skills, team work, and doing creative and imaginative play.

My students are noticeably happier, more productive, and build strong relationships in the classroom when they are active participants in free choice.

The products that I have selected will provide opportunities for students to have open ended play as well as closed ended play. Having a mixture of different play items will give students a choice of how they chose to play that day. Both types of play is very important and beneficial to my students. Open ended play will give the students a chance to create, and to use their imagination. While closed ended play activities will allow the students to practice following directions, taking turns, and practicing paying attention.

I have seen how free choice positivity affects my students community and hope that these additions to our free choice activities will strengthen our classroom community.
