My students are preschoolers in a special day class who seek sensory input experiences throughout the classroom environment. As each student is unique, they require different materials to meet their sensory needs. Yet, they will all benefit from exploring all the sensory-rich materials requested.
While most people are familiar with the typical five senses, three more are often overlooked but are heightened in students with special needs: Vestibular, Proprioceptive, and Interceptive.
It is essential in a Special Day Class to offer opportunities for students to receive holistic sensory input.
The Climber Arch Rocker can be used for vestibular input for students who need balance and rhythmic patterns for linear input, and then it can be used by students who need a place to calm down and work on their interception skills. The sand and funnel system will be added to the sensory table as this is a great way to offer texture to my students with sensory issues and help them develop fine motor and social skills and hand-eye coordination. The Poke-a-Dot books and Marble fidgets will help students focus during circle time and access the curriculum. As my students play with these materials, they will be stimulating their senses and learning at the same time they are playing.
