This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi! My name is Michelle Dooner and I'm a district social worker for SRVUSD. I work at 10 different schools. My colleagues are Tehseen Khan (DVFP) and Carl Nishi (SRVFP). Although there are three of us, I'm the leader of this project.

Together, we provide 1:1 mental health services to some of the students of SRVU.

Our sessions are typically 30 minutes in length and are held on a weekly basis. We use a variety of interactive tools in our work with students to help with their mental health needs. One tool that we would really love to have in our practice is a sand tray. Sand trays are a non-structured way for students to work through feelings, emotions, and conflict in a therapeutic way.

The portable sand trays are helpful to us because we can move them from school to school. The three of us cover 24 schools altogether.
