At the end of the day, my students are longing to connect with each other and relax. These games and activities will allow my students to take their minds off of life's pressure and enjoy just being a kid.
After a long day of engaged learning, my eighth graders deserve to disconnect from technology, release themselves from academic pressures, and have some classic fun.
Our class has designated times for students to choose something non-academic (traditionally speaking) to work on that allows for them to focus on their social emotional learning and wellness. This could look like coloring, basketball, yoga, dancing, puzzles, trivia, etc. My class has chosen unanimously to create a class-wide board game club because they feel that they are lacking time to just play as they get older. These days, playtime looks more like video games or sports/activities... and less like playing games with friends and family. I'm so proud of them for coming up with this idea!
Middle school can be a challenging time, both socially and emotionally. These games have activities that engage logic, math, art, connection, and perspective. I look forward to watching my students play together...off the screens!
