My Project

The goal of this project is to increase active engagement in the classroom. My school is located in a predominantly low-income area with many students who are multi-language learners. Every year I find new ways to make my students comfortable so they can best learn. This school year, flexible seating will be an option for all my young learners. Typically flexible seating is only realized for children with disabilities, 504 plans, and IEPs, but the accommodations made for them are often beneficial for most children when possible. Picture options, not just traditional table and chair groups but kick bands on all the chairs, wiggle seats, and open space on the carpet or pillows with clipboards available for kids who need to stretch and move while they work. As an educator and a mom, I see how much kids need to move their bodies. As much as I've told kids to settle down so others can focus, I know that a still body is not the best learning state for focus and learning. In fact, I've learned that lessons incorporating movement help kids to make connections and engage in any subject area. I believe flexible seating will also improve my ability to implement fluid, flexible grouping when immediate small group intervention is best.
