My Project

With these supplies, my students will be able to continue their work with Missouri Bee Atlas, Missouri Stream Team, and Project FeederWatch. We started these projects in the 2022-2023 School year and identified some needs for future data collection.

Our community is in the Lead Belt of Missouri and ecosystems here have been impacted by historic mining.

As we study ecosystems and biodiversity in science, it is important for students to see the ways that humans have impacted ecosystems in their own community and monitor efforts to improve ecosystem health.

Last summer we collected baseline data on biodiversity and bumblebees in our schoolyard with the help of MDC educators. This year, students have designed and planted a native pollinator garden to increase biodiversity with the hope of providing forage and habitat to native bees, birds, and pollinators. We would like to continue to collect data for Missouri Bee Atlas but need nets and cameras to do so!

This was also our first year participating in Project FeederWatch and making observations at a feeding station within the garden. We found that better binoculars would be beneficial in identifying birds.

Students have completed two Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring events at our local waterway, Flat River, and conducted trash pickups in conjunction. We are currently unable to test water turbidity as part of our collection. A turbidity tube would allow us to do this, and be helpful in discussing the effect of runoff and sediment in waterways in the classroom.
