Many students struggle to identify and regulate the strong emotions that they may feel from time to time. When frustrated, some can put themselves and others in danger. Cushions will help create a soft space on the floor while the posters help them identify and process. Giving them this space offers them a choice and teaches them that their feelings matter.
I hope to provide my students with a space in which they can grow and learn to regulate their big feelings.
Calm down corners teach children vital self-management skills and coping strategies. It can promote their self-esteem and prevents those large meltdowns that many small children have while also creating a structured and consistent routine when they feel this way. It can also help in developing communication skills when children don't know how to describe what they feel.
It's important that children understand that it is okay to be upset and frustrated. Instead of a traumatizing time-out, I hope to provide them with the much needed skills necessary in their development and give them a safe space to learn those skills.
