I work at a public school in Hawaii on the island of Oahu where I was born and raised. The school I work at has a mixture of military and local kids. I taught second grade for 6 years and this year I am teaching 6th grade. I absolutely love it! My school has a great staff and wonderfully supportive administration. I couldn't be happier here! Our students and staff are working on being "AVID." AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
Part of being an AVID student includes being organized, taking notes, being responsible for learning, asking and answering questions, etc.
Our school and students have been working hard on this and have come a long way! I try to reinforce these "AVID" strategies within my classroom daily and firmly believe that these strategies will help our students to become successful, life long learners.
My Project
These materials will greatly benefit the 6th grade class at my school! Every year we offer elective courses in an effort to prepare them for middle school. For school year 2018-2019 I wanted to offer a class that would teach students life skills in order to help prepare them for the real-world! I feel that sewing is a great place to start since it is fun and an important skill for human beings to know. (Eventually I hope to add a cooking class as well.)
With your donation, students will be able to have the materials such as needles, thread, and felt which students will use to create a pillow design of their choice!
Students will also create a costume for a Reader's Theater that they will out on in correlation with their Social Studies Class.
Students will also be using math skills as they will need to measure and follow step by step directions. With your donations, students will be able to use their creative side while also learning an important life skill! Please help us reach our goal of having a sewing class in the school year 2018-2019!
