My Students

My 6th graders are a diverse group of preteens who love to read, write, draw, and explore. They thrive in interactive small group learning environments within my classroom. My students are creative, thoughtful and full of wonder! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that allow them to think outside the box and challenge themselves to find solutions!

I give students the freedom to express themselves through art and writing by allowing them to create notebook entries, poetry, stories, and essays that THEY design and choose.

My Project

I would love to be able to provide my young authors more art and writing supplies, as well as more comfortable seating in my classroom. Not all students' parents can afford the "cool" supplies their children desire to create their masterpieces, and some kids come to school only with paper and pencils. Many of my students love to work on the floor, spreading out their materials and getting creative.

My students have asked for blank white journals, colored flair pens, new fine tip Sharpie markers, colored ink for their printed poetry, new electric pencil sharpeners, and mentor texts that will inspire them.

They want colorful paper to create beautiful poetry books. I feel they need a wider variety of classroom poetry books and mentor texts that will help guide their own creative writing. The more confident they are as 6th grade writers, the more likely they will succeed academically and emotionally in 7th and 8th grade and beyond.
